As was the case in 2009, mobile telecommunications should outperform the broader economy in the short and medium term. Recession took hold in early 2014, amid rising inflation and currency weakening, and the decline in private consumption will harm revenue in the short term. However, the sector's longer-term prospects remain good. Although the market has matured in recent years, there remains significant scope for development in the quality and scope of mobile telecoms services.
Mobile telecoms will account for the vast majority of telecoms revenue by 2018. Penetration is already much higher in the mobile sector than in fixed lines, at an estimated 147 subscriptions per 100 people in 2013, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-the UN's agency for information and communication technologies (ICT). This is the highest level among Latin America's major economies.
