摘要

Malaysia has one of the highest mobile-phone penetration rates in the region, with an estimated 148.5 subscriptions per 100 people in 2014,higher than
South Korea and the US.The hi出penetration rate iS probably due to the popularity of social media websites and the intense competition in the prepaid market. The Economist Interngence Unit expects penetration rates to rise further,to reach around 160 subscriptions per 100 in 2019.
However, growth in the number of subscriptions will slow to a modest 1%a year in 2015-19,owing to the high base,as well as increased use of mobile Internet services. Internet-based messenger and other services ale putting downward pressure on traditional mobile voice calls and SMS usage. All three major mobile telecommunications companies in 2014 reported healthv growth in revenue from data services and lower revenue from traditional messaging and voice calls. For example.mobile-phone company DiGi Telecommunications stated mat revenue from Intemet services grew by 37.9%year on year in the fourth quarter of 2014,while revenue from traditional messaging and voice revenue feU by 20.2%and 4.6%year on year respectively. In 2015-19 growth in the telecommunications sector Will be driven by demand for smartphones and newer technologies. As the rate of growth in subscriber numbers slows, telecoms providers are likely to channel their efforts into both reducing their cost base and raising average revenue per user through new services, rather than trying to attract more subscriptions.
