摘要
Argentina's automotive industry accounts for close to 5% of GDP, almost 20% of industrial production and 10% of exports (including auto parts). The sector enjoys government support, benefiting from a ban on used-car imports and various incentives for manufacturers.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects that continued peso adjustment will eventually boost export production, but domestic sales (both of passenger cars and of commercial vehicles) will continue to fall in 2015 as policy is tightened to control demand and help to rein in the inflationary impact of peso adjustment.
There should be a modest recovery in sales in 2016 and moderate growth thereafter, on the (extremely benign) assumption that peso adjustment and fiscal and monetary-policy tightening address Argentina's competitiveness problems, setting the stage for an export-led recovery. However, severe economic distortions and Argentina's 2014 sovereign default mean that there remains the risk of a much steeper, more prolonged recession, which would hit automotive production and sales badly.
