Venezuela remains highly dependent on petroleum products for its economic output and exports. As a result, the financial services sector accounts for a relatively small share of Venezuelan GDP (6% in 2013). Despite government interference in the industry, the sector has grown rapidly in recent years, helped by a rise in domestic public debt and capital controls, which keep liquidity trapped in the financial system.
State intervention, in the form of both directed credits and interest rate controls, as well as the state seizure of lenders, will continue to have an impact on the health and profitability of the banking sector. The state already has a substantial direct presence in the industry through full ownership of three of the top ten banks.
