The early part of 2014 saw some recovery of external confidence in the Portuguese economy: with yields on sovereign bonds felling, the country was able to return to international capital markets, and in May Portugal made a clean exit from its 2011-14 EU/IMF bail-out programme
However, domestic economic conditions remained weak, with the economy contracting again between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the first quarter of 2014, and unemployment still at 15%.
