摘要
Vehicle registrations continue to rise steadily, and registrations of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles reached 15.6m units in 2013, up by 8.1% on the previous year. This was the best year since 2007, when 16.1m vehicles were registered. The US accounts for around one-fifth of global automotive sales.
Direct employment in the motor vehicle and motor vehicle equipment industry amounted to 873,900 in September 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Motor vehicle and parts dealers add another 1.87m. Including jobs dependent on the automotive sector, the figure is closer to 13m jobs, or 10% of the labour force.
The US is the world's third-biggest producer of passenger vehicles (after China and Japan), typically defined in the US to include light trucks as well as passenger cars. The US produced 11m vehicles in 2013, up by 6.9% from the prior year. Automotive imports from Canada and Mexico are tariff-free under the North American Free-Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
