摘要
The automotive industry is not a significant contributor to the Greek economy, which is driven by the services sector. Greece has no production plants to speak of and domestic demand is met entirely through imports. Overall, the market remains underdeveloped, and car ownership levels are lower than in most of the EU.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the recovery to continue, albeit at a slower pace during 2015-19 as fiscal austerity slowly eases and consumer confidence revives. However, the cost of car ownership is already high in Greece, and the after-effects of the economic depression and still-fragile consumer demand will result in modest growth rates.
Small cars dominate passenger-car sales. The sale of diesel-powered cars was banned in the 1980s to curb growing pollution, but the ban was lifted in Athens and Thessaloniki in 2011.
