The right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) remains the largest party in parliament despite a slight loss of support at the 2011 general election. Its main rival, the left-wing Social Democratic Party (SP), is the second-largest party. Both are present in government, along with the Radical Democratic Party-Liberals (FDP), the Christian Democratic Party (CVP) and the smaller Conservative Democratic Party (BDP). The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the five-party governing coalition to serve its term through to late 2015.
The government will focus on improving the business environment and implementing social security reforms to make public-sector financing more sustainable. It will continue to adapt to changing international norms in relation to banking secrecy. The phase-out of nuclear power will start in the forecast period. Fiscal policy will be slightly expansionary, but the budget balance should record modest surpluses this year and in the remainder of the forecast period.
