摘要
Retail sales are forecast to reach C$399bn (US$311bn) in 2015, continuing a steady recovery from the global recession of 2009. In the forecast period The Economist Intelligence Unit expects nominal retail sales growth of 3.6% per year and real retail sales growth of around 1.7% per year.
The Canadian dollar has weakened considerably against the US dollar during the past year and we expect it to depreciate to C$1.34:US$1 by mid-2016, owing to low oil prices and higher returns in the US, before starting to strengthen again thereafter. A weaker currency will push up the price of imports and reduce the incentive to cross-border shop in the US.
Food and beverage sales are forecast to benefit from a growing emphasis on healthy food. Premium and convenience food that also fulfils the health requirement should thrive, driven by higher incomes.
