Tensions between the ruling party, the Patriotic Front (PF), and the opposition, as well as voters' dissatisfaction with poor governance and economic policy, will grow, weighing on political stability.
The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that real GDP growth will average 7% in 2014-18, supported by large investments in infrastructure and mines, rising copper production and robust growth in services and manufacturing.
We expect the current-account position to improve in 2015-16 as growth of copper exports outpaces that of imports. The balance will turn negative from 2017 as imports rise and mining company profit repatriation picks up.
