The president, Joko Widodo (known locally as Jokowi), began his five-year term on October 20th. His priorities include institutional reform, improving provision of public services and fighting corruption.
Progress is expected in reducing the fuel subsidy bill, and this will help to stabilise the public finances and free up funds for public investment. The fiscal deficit is forecast to average 1.7% of GDP in 2015-19.
High inflation and rising US interest rates will put the rupiah under downward pressure in 2015. However, we then expect the rupiah to strengthen, to average Rp11,419:US$1 in 2019, compared with Rp12,125:US$1 in 2015.
