The governing centre-right coalition was voted back into office with an increased majority following the parliamentary election on October 4th. Laimdota Straujuma continues to serve as prime minister.
We have revised down our estimate for GDP growth in 2014 from 2.8% to 2.3%, owing to a slowdown in growth in Russia and the EU. We forecast a pick-up to growth of 2.9% in 2015 and an average of 3.9% in 2016-19.
We expect the current-account deficit to widen further in 2015, to 2.1% of GDP, after reaching 1.8% of GDP in 2014, as export growth continues to be hurt by the sanctions between Russia and the EU, and imports remain subdued.
