The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the re-elected governing coalition of the VMRO-DPMNE and the ethnic Albanian DUI to serve its term to 2018.
We expect the budget deficit to widen for the fourth successive year in 2014, from 3.8% of GDP in 2013 to 3.9%. Spending control will remain problematic, but we expect the deficit to narrow slowly, to 2.7% of GDP by 2019.
Strong export growth helped the current-account deficit to narrow to 1.8% of GDP in 2013, but we expect it to widen again as the recovery boosts imports-to 2.6% of GDP in 2014 and 3.6% in 2015, and an average of 5.2% in 2016-19.
