摘要
Owing to its abundance of oil and gas resources, the two-island state of Trinidad and Tobago is one of the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean. With a population of 1.3m in 2012, GDP per head was an estimated US$19,267 in 2012, down from a peak of US$21,119 in 2008, owing to economic downturn in 2009-12.
The economy is dominated by hydrocarbons, which make up 45% of GDP, almost 60% of government earnings and over 80% of exports. However, hydrocarbons account for just 3% of jobs.
Out of total energy-sector GDP, oil and gas exploration accounts for around half and petrochemicals for one-quarter, with the remaining quarter split between refining and services.
