The Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition will govern with a small parliamentary majority. However, the main political parties will try to persuade members of parliament to switch sides in a bid to swell their ranks.
The Economist Intelligence Unit has revised up its GDP forecast in the light of stronger than expected data for the second quarter. We now expect real GDP to grow by 6% in 2014 and by an average annual rate of 5.6% in 2015-18.
We expect the exchange rate to average M$3.22:US$i this year, compared with an average of M$3.15:US$1 in 2013. Aided by persistent surpluses on the trade account, the value of the ringgit will strengthen to M$2.8o:US$1 by 2018.
