Competition in the mobile-phone market is set to remain intense as a result of mobile number portability (MNP) since 2008, sharp reductions in interconnection rates between mobile-phone operators, and the issuance of third-generation (3G) and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) licences (which allow a mobile operator without a network to use an existing network).
Intense competition in the mobile segment and the high cost of 3G licences, and 3G network rollout, have limited the appetite of the three main mobile operators to invest in further spectrum or launch fourth-generation (4G) services, which are not expected to be introduced in lurkey before 2016.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the mobile-phone penetration rate to rise from an estimated 93.8% in 2014 to close to 98.3% in 2019. This is approaching current rates in most EU countries, which are generally 100-120%.
