Japan is currently the third-largest retail market in the world, after the US and China, but will slip to fourth place in 2017, after India. Demographic changes-including the rapid ageing of the population and the trend towards smaller families, combined with a shrinking population-are increasingly affecting retail trends in Japan.
Retail sales amounted to ¥138.7trn (US$1.42trn) in 2013, of which food sales accounted for US$44obn (31% of the total) and non-food sales for US$981bn (69% of the total). The US-dollar value of retail sales is estimated to have fallen by over 20% in 2013-14, reflecting the sharp fall in the value of the yen during this period.
