Following a snap parliamentary election in October 2013, a new broad coalition government led by the left-wing Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD) was sworn in by the president on January 29th 2014. The coalition, which also consists of two other parties, the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and ANO 2011 (Yes 2011: Action of Dissatisfied Citizens), a centrist movement, comfortably won a vote of confidence in parliament on February 18th.
The lack of effective opposition from the political right seemingly puts the new administration in a strong position to serve out its full four-year term. The government has also been boosted by a return to economic growth in 2014 and stronger fiscal performance, which has allowed the coalition to avoid additional spending cuts. However, the ideological heterogeneity of the coalition could generate political instability as time goes on.
