Malaysia has one of the most well-developed automotive sectors in the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and will remain an important regional market for motor vehicles and parts in 2014-18. It is one of the largest markets in ASEAN for passenger cars and one of the biggest in the regional bloc for automotive parts.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects growth in sales of passenger vehicles to slow to an average of 4% a year in the forecast period, from 44% in 2013, as Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM, the central bank) embarks on a monetary policy tightening cycle from the second half of 2014. Nevertheless, the sector will continue to be a focus for government policies aimed at increasing competitiveness and making Malaysia a centre for energy-efficient vehicles.
