The Malaysian government regards the country's financial services industry as an important engine of economic growth. In 2013 it accounted for 7% of GDP at current prices. In terms of job numbers, the industry is small, accounting for only around 2.5% of national employment. This reflects the industry's limited pool of highly specialist personnel.
Malaysia's financial-asset base relative to the size of the economy, at 468% of GDP, is relatively large compared with some of its regional neighbours, but is dwarfed by that of Singapore (955% of GDP). Singapore is a major regional financial centre.
