In 2013 India was estimated to be the third-largest energy consumer in the world, after China and the US. Its population of over 1.2bn will ensure that the country remains one of the world's largest energy consumers and a net energy importer.
India has the world's fifth-largest reserves of coal, and coal will remain the most important fuel in India's energy mix during the forecast period. Despite new investment in generating capacity, electricity supply will struggle to meet demand and rolling blackouts will persist.
