Popular protests over closer ties across the Taiwan Strait and nuclear energy have destabilised the political scene. Taiwan's main political parties will come under pressure to respond to these growing public concerns in 2015-19.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the government to make steady progress on fiscal consolidation in the forecast period. The budget deficit is forecast to narrow to the equivalent of 0.5% of GDP by 2019, from 1.2% in 2015.
We expect the New Taiwan dollar to appreciate gradually in nominal terms against the US dollar in 2015-19. Firmer external demand will reduce the pressure on the authorities to support the competitiveness of local exports.
