摘要
Expenditure on healthcare is volatile, reflecting macroeconomic volatility and a lack of fiscal stabilisers, but remains among the highest in Latin America, accounting for an estimated 8.4% of GDP in 2014.
However, Argentina's lead in public healthcare provision over most other Latin American countries is narrowing. This partly reflects inefficient service provision, but it is also a reflection of demographic trends. The proportion of the population aged over 65 rose to 11.1% in 2013. This is up from 10.1% a decade earlier and is the highest level among Latin America's large economies, and is placing increasing demands on healthcare services.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects healthcare spending to reach 8.6% of GDP by 2019, assuming that the ageing population boosts demand, that rising real incomes gradually increase access to private services, and that the easing of public-sector external financing constraints late in the forecast period allows for greater government investment.
