French spending on healthcare is estimated at 11.7% of GDP in 2013, up from 11.6% in 2012. This share is higher than in any other EU country, but well below that in the US (16.9% of GDP in 2012). The French proportion is expected to edge down to 11.5% of GDP in 2015-19.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects annual healthcare expenditure per head to rise by 0.3% on average in US dollar terms (1.8% in euro terms) during 2015-19, to US$5,231 in 2019. This puts France among the top ten countries in the world for spending per head. As the population is also increasing, this equates to annual average growth in total healthcare spending of 0.8% in US dollar terms or 2.3% in euro terms.
These projections suggest that expenditure growth will remain within the annual target of 2.5% set by the national plan for annual spending on health insurance, the Objectife nationaux des depenses d'assurance maladie (Ondam) for 2014-17. We expect annual spending growth to accelerate above 3% in 2018-19.
