The US spends more than any other country in the world on healthcare, at an estimated 16.9% of GDP in 2013. However, growth in healthcare expenditure has slowed over the past three years.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects healthcare spending to grow by an average of 5% a year in 2014-18, raising healthcare spending as a percentage of GDP to 17.1% by 2018. Population growth means that spending per head will rise by an average of 4.1%.
