The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the governing coalition of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Popular Party (CDS-PP) to remain in power until the general election, due in September or October 2015.
Buoyed by successful bond market auctions following its exit from the three-year EU/IMF bail-out in May 2014, the government plans to repay its IMF loan ahead of schedule. It will pay more than the €500m due to be repaid in 2015.
After real GDP growth of 0.9% in 2014, we expect a modest acceleration in 2015, to 1.5%. This reflects a strong recovery in domestic demand, which we expect to drive growth of 1.6% a year in 2016-19.
