With the opposition ill-prepared for the general election on December 14th, a victory for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior ally, Komeito, appears to be a foregone conclusion.
The Bank of Japan (the central bank) remains determined to hit its core inflation target of 2% but, even with extra monetary stimulus, it does not now expect to achieve this until fiscal year 2016/17 (April-March).
The current-account surplus will rise steadily during the forecast period to reach the equivalent of 4.9% of GDP in 2019, mainly reflecting the merchandise trade account returning to surplus in 2018-19.
