摘要
Spain is the second-largest automotive manufacturer in Europe-behind Germany-producing 2.7m vehicles in 2015. The same number was produced in January-November 2016, up by 7.5% year on year, reflecting the ongoing recovery of the automotive industry in Europe. The full-year total will probably match or surpass the 2007 record of 2.9m vehicles. More than 80% of vehicles produced are passenger cars.
The Spanish economy crashed after the 2008 global financial crisis, and then again after 2010 as a result of the euro-zone debt crisis. Automotive sales plummeted but have been recovering at double-digit rates since 2014, driven by a modest economic upturn, pent-up demand and a government scrappage scheme, the Plan PIVE 8.
The Plan PIVE 8 was halted in mid-2016 but registration growth continued, albeit at slower pace. In 2016 new-car registrations rose by another 10.9%, to 1.15m units. Nevertheless, The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the market expansion to moderate in 2017, slowing further still by 2020. Overall, we expect a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for new-car sales of 2.5% in 2017-21.
