2016 was a year of modest achievement and innovation for space programmes across the globe: although the orbital launch rate dropped slightly, hundreds of small satellites reached low Earth orbit (LEO) and new startup companies sought huge amounts of funding for ambitious new satellite constellations and small launcher systems. The list of achievements include: the launches of two new Chinese rockets, the Long March 7 and Long March 5; the inauguration of China's new space launch centre at Wenchang on Hainan island; the delivery of China's second Tiangong space lab to LEO and a successful visit by a two-person crew; the return to service of the re-engined Antares launch vehicle; successful demonstrations of the reusability of the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket and Blue Origin's New Shepard suborbital vehicle; the arrival of NASA's Juno orbiter at Jupiter; and the completion of India's regional navigation network.
