The global market for civil explosives and blasting agents is approximately 13.9 million metric tons. Civil explosives are used in mining, quarrying and in civil works, i.e., the construction of tunnels and streets and the demolition of buildings. Ammonium nitrate-based explosives have by far the largest share in the civil explosives and blasting agents market. They are formulated as ANFO (ammonium nitrate fuel oil), emulsions or gels and slurries. Ammonium nitrate used for explosives is usually in the form of porous granules or prills. Ammonium nitrate-based bulk explosives require a detonator to explode. The production of technical-grade ammonium nitrate is mostly in the hands of fertilizer producers that also produce ammonium nitrate for its main use as fertilizer. The explosives business in turn is dominated by companies specialized in explosives and other mining chemicals. Explosives are normally not sold as chemicals, but rather in the form of explosives and blasting services including on-site formulation, engineering know-how, and drilling of the holes.
The explosives market is expected to stagnate in the forecast period because the main consuming segment of coal production will decline significantly over the forecast period. Use of explosives in metal and industrial mineral mining, and also in quarrying and other civil uses is expected to increase, and growth in these segments is expected to approximately make up for the losses from coal mining.
