Austria's comprehensive healthcare system is funded by near-universal social insurance. Despite a plunge in real GDP, health spending grew strongly during the coronavirus pandemic, rising by 13.4% in 2021. In 2022 total healthcare spending rose by 3.2% in local-currency terms, to 11.3% of the country's GDP, with this proportion slightly down from the previous year but well above the OECD average. Overall healthcare spending will remain above 11% of GDP throughout EIU's five–year forecast period (2024-28).
