In 2024, worldwide maleic anhydride (MAN) capacity was nearly 4.5 million metric tons, of which nearly 79% is in Asia, 9% in North America and 7% in Western Europe. This is a significant change from the early 1990s, when Asia had only 24% of total world capacity. Capacity build-up in mainland China, South Korea and UNV1 has contributed to the shift in capacity distribution. Notably, another wave of capacity expansions in mainland China during 2020–24 has made it account for about 70% of total world capacity. A capacity of 25,000 metric tons per year is expected to be added in the United States by 2025. In the near future, the world’s major MAN producers foresee no need for further industry capacity expansions, except for a few new projects planned in mainland China and one project in Canada in the next few years.
